How to meet Google and Yahoo’s email sender requirements in 2024

Maximize your marketing efforts and ensure that as few of your e-mails end up in the spam folder as possible! In this blog post, we will outline some of the necessary steps to comply with the new sender requirements of Google and Yahoo. Some of these new regulations have already come into effect in February 2024, and more will be introduced shortly.

Who will be affected by these new requirements?

These new requirements will impact everyone. While the term "bulk senders" might lead you to believe that these changes only affect certain individuals, that's not the case. Don't overlook the fact that these new requirements might apply to you too.

To be classified as a bulk sender, you need to send more than 5,000 emails per day. You might think that's a large number, but let's break it down together:

If you operate in the e-commerce sector, consider how many new subscribers or customers you acquire every day and add them to your welcome series. For instance, let's say you gain 50 new subscribers each day, resulting in 50 emails sent per day. If your welcome series consists of three emails, that adds another 100 emails over a few days. Now, since you continually gain new subscribers daily, multiply those 150 emails by each business day in a week: 150 x 5 = 750 potential emails per week.

Keep in mind that this scenario doesn't include other important email flows and campaigns such as…

  • transactional emails,
  • post-purchase flows,
  • abandoned cart flows,
  • browse abandonment flows,
  • win-back flows,
  • repeat purchase flows and any other campaigns.

Considering the recommended volume of automated messages for a successful retention marketing program, it's highly likely that most online retailers will exceed the 5,000 emails per day threshold at least once a month, particularly during peak periods.

The new regulations are also of paramount importance for private clinics and the healthcare sector, as the number of patients in a clinic that has been operating for a few years almost always exceeds 5,000. This means that even during the sending of a newsletter, the "bulk sender" threshold defined in the regulations may be reached.

It is important to understand that the regulations can be complex. Failure to comply with the general sender guidelines may lead to complications, even if you comply with the new guidelines.
